A good pairing is only the beginning. Professional book typography depends on how the type behaves across the entire reading experience, not simply whether two fonts look attractive beside each other.
Create hierarchy.
Use distinct type treatments for titles, headings, and body text so the reader can understand the structure of the page naturally.
Protect readability.
Avoid overly decorative fonts for long passages. Personality belongs in the right places, while body typography should remain comfortable.
Choose for the reader.
Novelty is rarely a good reason to choose a body typeface. Readability, rhythm, spacing, and tone should lead the decision.
Test realistic sizes.
Preview your fonts at realistic book sizes before committing to them. What works at 30px may behave very differently at book size.
