Best Practices for Book Barcodes
An unreadable barcode will delay retailer distribution, cause bookstore rejections, or force costly cover reprints. Here is what professional book designers check prior to press.
Protect quiet zones.
Maintain at least 0.25 inches (6mm) of solid white space to the left and right of the bars so laser scanners can detect the boundary.
Use solid black ink.
Barcodes must always be printed in 100% K (Key/Black) without rich black ink CMYK mixtures to prevent registration blur.
Respect minimum scale.
Standard GS1 Bookland size is 1.4" x 0.9" (35mm x 23mm). Never scale below 80% (1.1" width) on printed paperback covers.
Check human-readable text.
If a barcode is scuffed, cashiers manually key in the numbers below the bars. Both must match your copyright page ISBN perfectly.
